THE SHIKOKU INU – JAPANESE WOLF DOG? 四国犬

(U^ω^)わんわんお!

The Japanese Wolf was irradiated and most believe is extinct, but perhaps it’s left a legacy with one of the most primitive Japanese dog breeds who developed on the island where the wolf remained the longest before being annihilated. Many believe the Shikoku is the most primitive all of the Japanese breeds and has wolf like characteristics through his extremely primitive DNA. Did he descend from the Japanese wolf and how long ago was that? Does this make him a wolfdog? Find out today…

The Shikoku is Japan’s most primitive dog breed descended from the extinct Japanese Wolf. He’s brave but cautious, so much fun and likes to play hard. Other times he’s soft and acts precious like a cat. A totally fascinating breed with great beauty. I love him 😍

I’d love to see a video about the Eurasier dog! They’re a rarer breed to see in the UK but are incredible dogs with an awesome history.

You should look at Calupoh, it’s a Mexican breed that supposedly has wolf blood in it and was developed in the 1990s. It’s a beautiful black almost shepherd like dog. It’s got piercing brown or amber eyes. Really stunning dog. I couldn’t find much information over the internet most is in Spanish, which I don’t speak. I still thought It would be interesting to check out. My mother is from Oaxaca Mexico, she knew a rich girl in Mexico, that had a calupo named Lobo. My mom said he was huge, black and had gorgeous eyes. She doesn’t remember him being very vocal, but very intimidating when you first see one. She said Lobo liked her but would be standoffish with men.

That is exactly what I want in a dog , I love it’s primitive & independent nature .
If the right situation presents itself & I am lucky enough , one day I shall be the proud owner of one.

Interesting and informative video on this beautiful animal. For many reasons I could not live with this dog. Too much wolf in me, perhaps.
Thank you Anneka!

I have way too many Shiba Inu’s and these simply look and act like a large Shiba Inu. I’m sure I would love them as I love my Shiba’s.

Looks a bit like the spitz-type huntingdogs of Scandinavia, like Jämthund or the Norwegian Elkhound, but they do not have that wolf-like temperament

My dog is so much the same in terms of behavior. I have a mixture of German and Belgian shepherd and he’s 100% of everything that dog is. Often times hard outside with people walking small dogs that go crazy when they see him and i cannot find a way to explain to people that this is not a play dog and to him they look like food 😀 He also does not like to be touched by strangers and one time he got really angry at a kid that just straight out jumped to hug him over the head before i can warn him not to do that. The more i see how lazy and incompetent people are with dogs there more i feel that there should be a requirement to go take a dog school before you can own one.

I would love to see the other Nihon Ken, especially Kai Ken. They’re still pretty rare in the UK, but my favorite of all the Nihon Ken

I am so happy to see Shikoku Ken featured on Animal Watch! There are definitely great similarities between them and Shiba Inus. The majority of my shibas do not like strange dogs approaching them either. Crossing my fingers that we will also one day see Kai Ken, Hokkaido and Kishu featured!

Once upon a time, many wolves lived in Japan. Of course there were many dogs. In old Japan, dogs were free-range. Therefore, it is said that dogs and wolves were naturally mated. The ancestors of Shikoku dogs are said to have been born by mating the wolf and the dog. Alternatively, it is said that hunters mated wolves and dogs to create excellent hounds.

I’m Japanese, but I’ve never seen Shikoku dog in person probably because I’ve never been to Shikoku area. Such a beautiful animal!

Great that you featured the shikoku ken. Definitely not a dog for everyone. But I love mine. ❤️ they sure are Fiesty. I belive they do have about 2-3% wolf DNA from the ones that have been tested. Very inquisitive and aware.

That may be the wildest acting dog I’ve seen even more than any of the wolf dogs. He almost reminds me more of coyote behavior. In the face you definitely see a strong resemblance to that bizarre looking wolf they used to have. That wolf too looked ancient and less evolved.

Gorgeous breed, never heard of them before. I absolutely love primitive dog breeds, their independent personality and confidence is just amazing. Unfortunately I don’t think I would ever get used to their prey drive.

Love this film . But to say about the tosa many breeds went into the tosa mainly mastiffs and bull breeds . This beautiful little dog is very typical of a lot of Japanese dog breeds I’ve owned Akitas which are very similar in temperament friends I’ve known over the years have owned the Shiba inu’s say the same about their dogs

That’s half of the six native Japanese dog breeds! I hope you can cover the other three at some point. I met a Kai Ken a while back and she was just the cutest, sweetest dog ever.
